Program Notes about "Lullaby of the Drums"

Leroy Anderson wrote a series of pieces for beginning orchestra, including "Lullaby Of The Drums" (1970), "March Of The Two Left Feet" (1970), "Melody On Two Notes" (1966), "Waltz Around The Scale" (1970), and "Whistling Kettle" (ca. 1966).

"Lullaby Of The Drums" features the percussion section - snare drums, timpani and bongos in a slow march. Leroy Anderson withdrew this composition after its premiere. The Leroy Anderson family decided to publish the work in the years following the composer's death. Leonard Slatkin recorded "Lullaby of the Drums" with the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2007.
