Celebrates the Music of Leroy Anderson
Hatch Memorial Shell
Charles River Esplanade
Boston, Massachusetts
Under the baton of Harvard Band Director Thomas G. Everett, the Harvard Summer Pops Band will
present an all-Anderson concert on the shores of the Charles River. As part of the Centennial
kick-off, this very special afternoon highlights one of Anderson's earliest and most important
endeavors, as he played in The Harvard Band when he attended the university and returned in the
early 1930's as its director. He composed and arranged numerous works especially for the band, and
is forever linked to one of Harvard's oldest student-run institutions.

Leroy Anderson Celebration
Special Centennial Celebrations Throughout 2008
The Swedish ancestral home of the Anderson family will celebrate one of its most famous sons throughout the 2008 centennial year. Although Leroy was born in the United States, his father, Bror Anton Anderson, emigrated with his family from Övarp near Kristianstad in Skåne. Musicians and music lovers from the city were overwhelmed when they learned the Anderson family hailed from their region, and worked to create a variety of events dedicated to Leroy Anderson.

> Many compositions of Leroy Anderson were performed by members of the Kristianstadsmusikkåren (Kristianstad Municipal Band) at the Norra Strö Historical Society (Övarps hembygdsgård) building, the former schoolhouse where Leroy Anderson's ancestors attended grammar school.
> Compositions included Serenata, Belle of the Ball, Rakes of Mallow, Blue Tango, Clarinet Candy and Syncopated Clock.
> The celebration included an introduction by Tommy Stjernqvist, Chairman of the Leroy Anderson Festival Committee, who explained to the audience of 150 people the origin of the festival and described the celebrations that day in Woodbury, Connecticut.
> Leroy Anderson's cousin Therese Ericsson made a special exhibit about Leroy Anderson's roots in Övarp. Norra Strö Historical Society Chairwoman Britt-Louise Håkansson presented Therese Ericsson with a grant in recognition of her significant contribution to the research and presentation of historical information about Leroy Anderson's Swedish heritage.
> The ancestral home of the Andersson family was open to the public through the generosity of the current owner, Mats Mårtensson.
